ForestryGlossaryForestry 101Maps
Modern forestry serves the purpose of managing trees to supply a variety of goods and services to society. These goods and services include a supply of timber products, wildlife habitat, ecosystem function, quality forest-based recreational and tourism experiences, trapping opportunities and places for solitude and reflection.

Compare this to activities in the 1800's and the first portion of the 1900's when forests were mainly viewed as limitless resource and a hindrance for settlement. This gave way to multiple use of the forest where uses of the forests for other than logging were accommodated. Provincial policy then changed to embrace the idea of integrated resource management that put all forest uses on a more level playing field. While this has not changed significantly, modern forestry is focused on conserving biodiversity and emulating natural disturbance patterns.
