Areas of Concern

An “Area of Concern” (AOC) is a geographic area within an area of operations which is adjacent to an identified natural resource feature, land use or value that may be affected by forest management activities.  – Glossary, Forest Management Planning Manual for Ontario’s Crown Forests

Non-timber forest values are identified in the initial stages of the planning process from:

  • contributions by the Local Citizens Committee
  • local First Nation Communities
  • general public
  • forest workers
  • various MNR program groups represented on the planning team
  • other government ministries and agencies.

AOC prescriptions are made for individual values or groups of values to ensure that limitations and requirements are specific to different values. Prescriptions can include no harvest buffers around values, timing restrictions on when operations can be done, or both.

For instance, when an active great blue heronry – or rookery – is found, forest management is modified to minimize any potential negative impacts by maintaining the visual integrity of the area and not disrupting the birds during the nesting season.  This is accomplished through:

  1. a no cut reserve buffer for 75 meters from the nests;
  2. a no clearcut buffer and an early spring to mid-summer timing restriction from 76-150m from the nests; and,
  3. a timing restriction for machinery during that early spring-mid-summer season from 150m to 300 m from the nests

For more information on AOC prescriptions, please click here. Select French-Severn Forest from the drop down menu, scroll down past the map, and click Forest Management Plan – 2019 – 2029 from the list. Scroll down to Published Files and click Final Plan Tables. You can download or preview the FMP tables. AOC prescriptions can be found under the FMP-11 section.
